A Book Town - of which there are now, officially, 12 in Europe - is a place where dealers in secondhand and antiquarian books are encouraged to locate in order to boost the local economy. The first of these was Hay-on-Wye in Wales. Sedbergh became England's first Book Town in 2006, administered by a local Trust which also runs the Tourist Information Centre at 72 Main Street. The launch of the Book Town on 12th May 2006 was celebrated by speeches at the newly-opened and spacious premises of Westwood Books at the eastern end of Main Street.
