Sedbergh has been described as a 'campus town'. It is dominated - economically well as physically - by the public school which was originally founded by Roger Lupton in 1525. Many of the School buildings - including the Chapel, the Powell Hall, and some of the boarding houses - were products of the Lancaster architects Paley & Austin in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
