Book Town

Sunday Morning

Old Sedbergh comprises three principal streets: the narrow, winding Main Street, Back Lane which separates the town from the playing fields of Sedbergh School, and Finkle Street which runs alongside St Andrew's Parish Church. These streets are lined with stone-built houses, cottages and shops, and off them run a variety of other streets and cobbled alleyways. The town's inns catered for those travelling eastwards from Kendal and northwards from Kirkby Lonsdale, while its ancient market served the surrounding agricultural area. Today Sedbergh remains a thriving local centre - and has been designated as England's first Book Town.
