To commemorate the granting of a Charter in 1251, allowing the townspeople of Sedbergh to hold a market, a celebratory Fayre is held each August when the present-day inhabitants don medieval costume and Main Street is closed to traffic. Stalls and street entertainers take over for a day and bring a uniquely colourful atmosphere to the town. Highlights include the judging of the Fancy Dress competition, as well as open-air performances by singers, musicians and dancers from near and far.
